Adelaide-built Brabham BT62 set to soar through Superloop 500 circuit

Ex-F1 driver and Le Mans winner David Brabham is set to make a powerful statement with his locally-built namesake supercar in a rare public demonstration next month.

Can a plane beat a Brabham supercar?

The track is already super.

The Adelaide-built Brabham BT62 supercar is just the cherry on top.

And to sweeten things just a little more, former Formula One driver and Le Mans winner David Brabham will tear up Adelaide streets in the special 5.4-litre V8 during rare public demonstrations next month.

Powering up the $1.8 million vehicle, Brabham is excited to give enthusiasts a glimpse of the 522 kilowatt machine when he zooms through the Superloop Adelaide 500 street circuit.

Brabham is the son of three-time F1 World Champion Sir Jack Brabham and raced in the then SA-based Australian Grand Prix in 1990 and 1994.

“To drive the BT62 around the Superloop Adelaide 500 street circuit will be a fitting tribute to my father as we celebrate the 60th anniversary his first F1 World Championship in 1959,” Mr Brabham said.

“Alongside our family ties to Australia, the region of SA holds a rich automotive heritage as well as hosting one of the most popular motorsport events in Australia.”

Motorsport fanatics were left in a spin last year when it was announced car manufacturing would return to SA.

Designed by David Brabham, only 70 BT62 cars will be built at a factory in Edinburgh Parks, just 1km from Holden’s former Elizabeth factory, which closed in 2017.

The Brabham name became Australian motorsport royalty after Sir Jack, in 1966, became the only person to win a F1 World Championship in a car he designed and built.

He famously ran out of fuel on the last lap of 1959 United States Grand Prix in Florida and was forced to push his Cooper T51 across the chequered line to finish fourth. He died in 2014 aged 88.

The BT62 will be on display in-between its on-track appearances and will feature alongside historic Brabham race cars.

The Superloop Adelaide 500 runs from February 28 to March 3.
