Three baby otters are giving zookeepers something to smile about in trying times as the newest additions to the Adelaide Zoo family.
The triplets were born on March 24, and were found sleeping in their den by keepers. They are the second litter from parents Kalaya and Bao following the birth of two pups last year.
Zookeeper Matt Golebiowski said the otters’ second go at parenting had been different to the first.
“Kalaya and Bao have experience now, and are incredibly relaxed and caring parents,” he said. “We’ve been monitoring then from afar to let the new family have some bonding time.”
Asian small-clawed otters are born with their eyes closed and rely on their parents in the first weeks of life.
They will meet their siblings after their first health check.
