THOUSANDS of homes were without power as thunderstorms lashed parts of the state on Tuesday evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled an severe thunderstorm warning at 9.30pm after the severe weather threat subsided.

However, almost 7400 properties were without power across SA at 11pm on Tuesday, down from more than 9000 earlier in the evening.

Power had been cut to 3300 properties in Pasadena, Tonsley, St Marys, Mitchell Park and Clovelly Park. It was expected to be reinstated at about 11pm.

Henley Beach, Fulham Gardens, Kidman Park and Lockleys have also been plunged into darkness.

Just under 100 properties in Burton, Paralowie and Albert Park, were also powerless.

On the Yorke Peninsula, power outages affected 3829 properties in towns including Port Vincent, Minlaton, Yorketown, Port Victoria and Port Pearce.

More than 300 homes on the Eyre Peninsula, including in Cleve and Cowell, were also without electricity.

SA Power Networks has been investigating the cause of the outages and has determined that some have been caused by lightning strikes.

Power was expected to be reconnected as early as 10pm in some suburban Adelaide areas while other areas may have to wait until about 1am.

Earlier in the evening, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the eastern Eyre Peninsula and North West Pastoral districts.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging wind gusts in excess of 90km/h in the warning area over the next several hours,” it says.

“Locations which may be affected include Whyalla, Tarcoola and Kimba.”

However, this and another thunderstorm warning for the Yorke Peninsula have both been cancelled.

The BOM says a wind gust of 89km/h was recorded at Tarcoola during a thunderstorm at 5pm today.
