Former Socceroo and Adelaide United football director Bruce Djite will be the new CEO of the Committee for Adelaide, a group that advocates for a more prosperous future for the state.

Mr Djite, who starts the new role in July, played 158 games for Adelaide United, scoring 41 goals, and nine for the Socceroos.

A Bachelor of Business degree holder, Mr Djite previously had been speculated as a state Liberal candidate.

Committee for Adelaide chairman David Lloyd said Mr Djite’s off-field achievements had most impressed the board.

“Bruce has strong networks and relationships across sport, government, media, business, diplomats, not-for-profits and community-based organisations, all of which will help to write a new chapter in the Committee’s history,” said Professor Lloyd, also UniSA’s vice-chancellor.

“His career has spanned five countries across three continents and includes several years’ experience in leadership, strategy, advocacy and business development.”

Djite is an Adelaide United club legend and the A-league club’s record goal scorer, who has been renowned for shining a light on racism in society.

The Committee for Adelaide’s members include BHP, Santos, Deloitte, KPMG, Westpac and universities.

It is part of a network extending across Australia and New Zealand. The Committee brings together groups that aim to use their networks, experience and expertise to help shape a more prosperous future for SA.

Professor Lloyd said outgoing CEO Jodie van Deventer had more than tripled membership and revenue under her leadership in the past five years.

Mr Djite’s football career also included professional stints at clubs in Turkey, South Korea and Indonesia.

He will be leaving his role asAdelaide United’s director of football, to which he was appointed in June 2019.
