Adelaide pub The Unley’s new cocktail in tribute of Matthew Perry slammed as in poor taste

The popular Adelaide hotel said it meant to honour the TV star after he was found dead at his LA home over the weekend.

An Adelaide pub has apologised after an $18 cocktail intended to honour late Friends star Matthew Perry was slammed for being in poor taste.

The Unley, in Parkside, revealed on Tuesday it was launching a new “cocktail of the month” called the Chandler Bing, as a “tribute” to Perry, who was found dead at his Los Angeles home on Sunday.

The pub has since acknowledged the promotion was an error of judgement

The drink, priced at $18, included Southern Comfort, peach schnapps, cranberry, fresh lime and sugar.

“A tribute to our sarcastic king. We present to you, The Chandler Bing,” said the caption on the Instagram post.

“#cocktail #cocktailofthemonth #chandlerbing #matthewperry #friends #ripking”

But followers of The Unley’s account said the cocktail “feels so wrong” given the actor had a much-publicised battle with alcohol addiction.

“This feels so wrong considering he battled alcoholism,” wrote one person.

“Anyone who’s seen his interviews and read his book would know that Friends was actually not what he wanted to be remembered for, his words, not mine,” another commented.

Another wrote: “You know he was an alcoholic, don’t you?”

A year before his death, Perry opened up about his previous battles with drugs and alcohol abuse in his memoir Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing.

After having his first drink at 14, Perry said that he had attended 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and entered rehab 15 times.

He noted while he was promoting the book that he had been clean for 18 months but had “probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober.”

The Unley has since decided to remove the cocktail from their drinks list.

“The cocktail was intended as a tribute to a beloved actor and icon, however we recognize that this was an error in judgement, and have removed the cocktail,” The Unley said in a statement.

“We are deeply regretful of any hurt that this has caused.”
