A motorist will face court next month accused of killing a pensioner by dangerous driving in a horror head-on crash between two cars in the state’s Mid North.

Emergency services were called to Port Wakefield Rd at Lower Light, 40km north of Adelaide, at 3.15pm on Friday.

The driver of a Toyota SUV, an 81-year-old man from Oakden, in Adelaide's north-east, was initially trapped in the wreckage.

He was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with critical injuries but died later on Friday.

The driver of a silver Audi sedan, a 53 year-old man from Rostrevor, in Adelaide’s east, was not seriously injured while his passenger was treated for minor injuries.

Late on Saturday night, police announced that Major Crash detectives had charged the Audi driver with causing death by dangerous driving after an investigation.

The circumstances have not been revealed.

He was granted bail to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court later next month.

The crash took the road toll to 26 compared to 16 at the same time last year.
