Adelaide Cup: SA’s most famous horse race is city’s first big event and Daqiansweet Junior takes out the big race

It was a sweet victory for some in the Adelaide Cup, while racegoers just enjoyed being able to mingle freely.

Winx storms home

The only thing sweeter than the atmosphere at this year’s Adelaide Cup was the victory for Daqiansweet Junior, who took out the final race.

The horse’s owner Diana Vawdrey said that five is her lucky number and today was no exception.

Ms Vawdrey and her guests erupted in cheers as Daqiansweet Junior, ridden by Jamie Kah, made it over the finish line.

“I’m about to have a heart attack,” she quipped.

The crowd were excited too, with many enjoying the lively atmosphere despite the warm 34C temperature.

The 5500 spectators were welcomed by South Australian Jockey Club chief executive officer Grant Mayer after he anticipated only about 4500 patrons earlier in the week.

“It’s a testament to people wanting to get out and about and enjoy themselves,” he said.

And racegoers were doing just that, particularly Samarah Waters, Anna Colovic, Belina Pupa and Pippy Mount who were sipping drinks in the Leilani room enjoying their race day with first class tickets.

“We’re just happy with the champagne,” Ms Colovic said.

Despite their bets not coming off, the ladies remained in high spirits.

First time race goer Sophie Modra was blown away by the atmosphere saying that “it’s really good”.

Miss Modra and friend Kara Phillips were trying to find shade in the Canadian Club area and buying drinks to stay cool.

While Canford didn’t take out the race this year, owner Lisa Wilkie still had a beautiful day, soaking up the atmosphere.
