Adelaide and SA weather: wind, rain and hail hit the state, powerlines catch alight as tree branch falls

Wild weather has brought a branch down on powerlines, sparking a small blaze at Daw Park. It comes as hail, strong winds and rain mark the coldest Adelaide day since August.

Rain, wind and hail has battered the state overnight, with wild weather set to continue across parts of SA in the coldest day for Adelaide since August.

The highest falls recorded was in Mt Lofty, recording 25.6mm since 9am Monday.

Other areas that saw high totals include Kuitpo, which had 23.6mm, Cape Borda on Kangaroo Island, recording 21.8mm and Mt Gambier with 22.8mm.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecast Jenny Horvat said Adelaide’s maximum of 12.6C at 12.20pm on Tuesday was the coldest day since August 7, which hit 10.3C.

There was also hail across Adelaide throughout the night.

Just before 7am this morning, strong winds brought down a branch on to powerlines on Goodwood Rd at Daw Park, sparking a small blaze.

SA Power Networks attended the scene, and said 1700 people in the Daw Park, Colonel Light Gardens and Panorama area were affected by outages from 7am until about 8.20am.

Wind gusts of 93km/h were recorded at Adelaide Airport and Neptune Island, 80km/h at Cleve, and 72km/h in parts of the Yorke Peninsula including Minlaton.

Adelaide will reach a high of 14C on Wednesday, with potential morning showers, and dry conditions are expected for Thursday forecast at 17C.

“There might be some light showers on Friday and Saturday, but nothing like what we’ve seen (earlier this week),” Ms Horvat said.

A severe weather warning remains in place for the West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Easter Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders and the Mid North.

A statewide marine wind warning is also in place for SA.

Police are warning motorists to drive to conditions, activating head lights if needs be, and staying at a safe distance from other cars on the road.

The State Emergency Services were kept busy responding to severe weather call-outs, including water entering properties in Linden Park, Clarence Park, Croydon Park, Modbury Heights, Blakeview, and Beulah Park.

Trees were reported down at Ceduna, Christies Downs and Kangarilla.

Crews remain at Salisbury East and Strathalbyn this morning in the latest severe weather call-outs.

The cold conditions have triggered a statewide code blue response, which was also in place on Monday night.

Baptist Care SA’s WestCare Centre, off Wright St in the city, catered for 30 of the city’s homeless people, accommodating two-thirds of its Covid-19 restricted capacity of 45.

Of the 30 people who sought shelter and a meal at the WestCare centre, 14 were female and 16 were male.

Eighteen of the 30 people stayed overnight.

On Tuesday, 67 at-risk people sought shelter and breakfast from the Hutt St Centre, double the number the centre would serve on an average morning.

Housing SA and other government agencies will make additional accommodation and support services available for people sleeping rough.

On Tuesday evening, the following locations will be open for shelter:

– Baptist Care’s Westcare Centre will be open for overnight accommodation from 3pm.

– Hutt St Centre will be open from 7am and will provide for overnight accommodation.

– SYC will extend their operating hours until 7pm.

– Street to Home will be doing additional outreach support.
