Christmas at Glenelg will look a little different this year.
Rather than the traditional Glenelg Christmas Pageant, which has been cancelled because of COVID restrictions, a two-day celebration will be held to welcome in the festive season.
Holdfast Bay Council will next month host the free Christmas at the Bay event, which will feature appearances from Father Christmas, carol singers and children’s activities.
There will be a stage on the foreshore and roving performers along Jetty Road.
Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said it was extremely important to the council that it still held a Christmas event.
She said the traditional pageant usually attracted more than 20,000 spectators, and its open nature meant COVID requirements around crowd density, social distancing and contact tracing could not be met.
“After careful consideration, we’ve made the decision to reimagine the traditional pageant and to change the format for 2020,” Ms Wilson said.
“I am delighted we have found a way that we can still celebrate the magic of Christmas together as a community, at this new event, Christmas at the Bay.”
The Glenelg Christmas Pageant is one of a raft of festive events to be cancelled across the state, including the Hahndorf Christkindlmarkt, the Mawson Lakes Christmas Carols and Walkerville Council’s popular Miniature Christmas Pageant.
The National Pharmacies 2020 Christmas Pageant will be held at Adelaide Oval, rather than through city streets, on November 14.
Ballot registrations for the 20,000 available tickets to the pageant are close today (Friday) at 10pm, and the ballot system will then electronically and randomly select those people who will attend.
Individuals can request up to five free tickets to the twilight event by registering at christmaspageant.com.au.
Christmas at the Bay will be held on November 28 and 29, from 10am to 4pm.
