51 SA schools to have funding frozen but none will have less under 10-year, $18 billion budget overhaul

NO South Australian school will lose funding under the Federal Government’s planned overhaul but some will receive windfalls of more than 10 per cent, figures show.

From Tuesday, parents can access an online estimator which shows exactly how their child’s school will benefit from the additional $18.6 billion investment in Australian schools.

Government figures show that in 2027, the estimated funding per Catholic school student would be $12,493 and $10,853 per student in the independent sector.

Suneden Special School in Mitchell Park would be among the 33 schools nationwide to receive a boost of more than 10 per cent.

Based on current arrangements, the independent school received $20,017 per student this year while under the proposed changes, it would get $22,712 per student next year.

Education Minister Simon Birmingham said the estimator would help parents and schools understand what the Coalition’s funding plan means for them.

“Our plan invests an additional $18.6 billion of needs-based funding into Australian schools over the next decade,” he said.

“Our plan factors in the background, family life, levels of disability and socio-economic status of each student and school to ensure funding is truly needs-based and fair.

“We’ve been open and up-front all along that more than 9000 schools are set to receive significant funding boosts according to their need — but that also means some schools will have their funding levels frozen or reduced.”

Education Minister Simon Birmingham says some schools will have their funding frozen or reduced.

In total, 51 schools would have their funding frozen – which has been labelled a cut by another name – or reduced. But none of these schools are in South Australia.

On Monday, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten again accused the Government of cutting $22 billion from schools.
