4WD with solar panel, gas rig and mutilated plates caught on Belair Road
A DRIVER’s creative 4WD modifications have failed to impress SA Police, who hit the Brooklyn Park man with a heavy fine for the aftermarket additions.
A 4WD sporting a solar panel installed on its bonnet and a jerry-rigged gas canister mounted on the rear has failed to impress South Australian Police at the weekend.
Traffic police stopped the Toyota on Belair Road just before 10am on Saturday after spotting its striking aftermarket alterations.
They discovered the car’s numberplate had also been sliced in two with each half fixed to the front on either side of a winch.
While innovative, the amateur auto-engineering failed to win over the traffic officers.
The 56-year-old driver was fined for the mutilated numberplate but only cautioned over the solar panel and gas tank mounts and was told he must remove them.
His car was defected and now needs to pass motor registry inspection before it can legally be driven on the roads again.
“These illegal additions create a significant safety risk in the event of a collision and SAPOL would like to remind motorists that any object fitted to a vehicle must be designed, built and fitted to the vehicle in a way that minimises the likelihood of injury to a person making contact with the vehicle,” Brevet Sergeant David Williams said.
“Any fittings, hooks or attachments must not have any sharp edges, corners or protrusions”.
The incident cost the driver $752 in an on-the-spot fine.
