THE SES advises that flooding in and around Gawler is still a threat to homes and public safety and has issued a new flood emergency warning this morning.
Suburbs which may be affected include Gawler, Hillier, Gawler River, Angle Vale, Penfield Gardens, Two Wells, Lewiston, Virginia, Port Gawler and Buckland Park. The SES says water levels are still very high in the Gawler River. The river has already broken its banks in a number of places and there is a possibility of further breaks or levee failures. Meanwhile, the SES has issued a Flood Watch and Act message for Port Wakefield. It says though flooding in the area has stabilised, significant amounts of water are still present. Some roads that were closed have now been re-opened. The flood emergency follows unprecedented severe weather which began with freak storms on Wednesday afternoon. However, it’s not over yet, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of more heavy rains on their way to South Australia later on Monday. Live coverage of the South Australian floods has ended for now. The bystander who captured the footage above said a number of people told the young men, who were riding on makeshift rafting equipment, that they were being foolish and should get out of the river. “They just yelled out ‘Nah nah, we’re right, we’ve been paddling for ages,” he said.
