While they may still be chasing a maiden win this season, Claremont’s Lachlan Blackwell is confident they can continue to show improvement against second-place Huonville Lions on Saturday.

The Magpies have shown improvements over the first five rounds of the season, averaging 64 points per game for the last three weeks compared to 11 points the first two weeks.

They’ll need to be at their best against the powerhouse Lions with the women and men’s round 6 double-header available live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 12pm.

Despite a tough start to the season, Blackwell said the focus has continued to remain the same week in, week out.

“We have a standard we know we can play, it is just about maintaining that standard for four quarters,” Blackwell said.

“Coming up against a very good team this week, I think they are second on the ladder and we’ve copped a few poundings from them in the past.

“As I said before, it is the standard, if we can bring the standard we know we can bring for four quarters, we can put it up to them.

“They’re very quick off halfback, and the midfield as well, all over the field they are very good.

“We’ve had a tough couple of weeks recently off the field but we are wrapping our arms around one another and sticking together, we are like 22 brothers on and off the field.

“We are really tight as a group and the morale is still very high, even though we aren’t getting those wins.”

The Lions however are coming off a strong win against premiership contender Dodges Ferry last weekend.

Lions coach Callen Daly said they still haven’t had their best side together this year in what is a dangerous sign for the rest of the competition

“We are still missing seven or eight players from our starting 22, so that just goes to show the depth we have at the club,” Daly said.

“We won’t take the Magpies lightly. I know Nathan, their coach, really well and what he is about and I have seen how much they have improved this year under him.

“It’s what we all want – to have a tight competition.

“We will set up normally and focus on how we play footy and our brand and we know we can take care of business if we just continue to play our style of footy.”

Huonville have lost just the one game this year, falling at the hands of premiership favourite Cygnet by 20 points.
