A ‘big unit’ of a truckie who slapped a man filming him urinating at an outback pub has been ordered to pay his victim $3000.

South Australian man Mohammed Tasleem Dean Tahir appeared in Darwin Local Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to assaulting another man at the iconic Daly Waters Pub.

Judge Greg MacDonald heard Tahir, 35, was drunk and angry after being cut off from the bar on June 4, 2022, when the driver went to relieve himself.

While urinating, Tahir noticed another man filming him.

The court heard the larger Tahir slapped the man in the face, which also knocked their phone to the ground.

Tahir’s defence lawyer Peter Maley said this was “a stupid, spontaneous act” and “an over-reaction”.

Mr Maley said Tahir’s victim was initially treated with an ice pack, but later had to attend Katherine Hospital due to a “constant headache and soreness”.

Mr MacDonald told Tahir since “you’re an absolutely big unit” he had an “additional obligation to not inflict violence on anyone”.

“People your size need to not ever hit other people because it can cause so much damage,” he said.

“I have no doubt that the only reason you’re before this court is because … you were intoxicated — and I do wonder how you would have gone the next morning.”

But Mr MacDonald also noted the Adelaide trucking business owner had shown clear remorse, writing a letter of apology to his victim.

He said while there was a “very serious” charge of violence on Tahir’s record from 12 years ago, it was clear the defendant had made “the good yards since”, and had become a respected member of his community.

“He does seem to have done well, but this is really falling from grace significantly,” Mr MacDonald said.

Tahir was convicted for the aggravated assault and was ordered to pay $3000 to his victim, along with the $150 victims levy.

He was placed on an 18-month community corrections order.
