A NEW hotel could be built on the site of a defunct mine in a Yorke Peninsula national park, a development the SA Liberals say would create millions of dollars in new tourism activity.

The Advertiser can reveal Opposition Leader Steven Marshall would issue a call for expressions of interest to develop and operate accommodation at Stenhouse Bay in the Innes National Park, on a long-term lease, if he wins the election in March.

The park includes the Inneston “ghost town”, once home to 200 people.

It serviced the former gypsum mine and was completely self-sufficient with a school, post office, bakery, general store and tennis court.

The park currently offers seven renovated heritage lodges that can be rented by the night and is visited by tourists keen to see wildlife including dolphins and kangaroos as well as bushwalk, surf, fish and dive.

Opposition tourism spokesman David Ridgway said more must be done to unlock nature-based industries in an area with “some of the most unique and beautiful environments in the world”.

“We’re not doing enough to develop nature based tourism offerings,” he said.

“We will begin unlocking our tourism potential by allowing the development of accommodation services in Innes National Park and making it the jewel in the crown of Yorke Peninsula’s tourism offerings. A former gypsum mine in the park will be the site of the development.

“This will drive more tourists into Innes National Park and throughout Yorke Peninsula, which will inject millions of dollars into the economy and support much needed regional jobs.”

The Liberals say the former gypsum mine is a “perfect location”, as it would allow development to occur in the area without disturbing the pristine environment nearby.
