WALKING and cycling trails and linear parks would spring up across Adelaide through a $28m election pledge by Labor.
Environment and Conservation Minister Ian Hunter visited the River Torrens in Lockleys to announce that a re-elected Labor Government would spend $5m upgrade Breakout Creek through wetlands rehabilitation and outdoor recreation spaces near the mouth of the river.
The funding package also includes $8m for new linear parks along other Adelaide waterways and $15m to finish connecting walking and cycling paths along Adelaide’s coastline and develop public beachside areas.
The completed Coast Park would stretch 70km from North Haven to Sellicks Beach. About 45km is already in place.
Mr Hunter said an early priority would be to open inaccessible parts of the Sturt River in Glenelg North for walkers, runners and cyclists.
He also called for public ideas on what other parts of Adelaide should be targeted.
Local councils will need to contribute money to ensure the projects go ahead, he said.
Mr Hunter said the $28 million State Government pledge would “make our state’s natural beauty more accessible to more people”.
“Adelaide is one of the most liveable cities in the world and Labor will build on this reputation by allowing even more locals, visitors and families to access and enjoy our beaches, open spaces, parks and playgrounds,” Mr Hunter said.
