Turnbull confirms Australia is exempt from Trump's tariffs

A DEFIANT Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has refused to countenance the prospect of the Liberal Party remaining in the political wilderness for another term.

Buoyant after securing a commitment from US President Donald Trump that Australia would be exempted from its new steel and aluminium tariffs, Mr Turnbull visited a McLaren Vale winery to spruik overseas exports.

Flanked by Opposition Leader Steven Marshall, Mr Turnbull would not comment on the future leadership of South Australia’s Liberal Party if Mr Marshall failed to win next week’s election.

He said Mr Marshall was “an absolute vital necessity” to South Australia.

“Steven Marshall will be successful next Saturday and he will form a government because I have great faith that the people of South Australia will recognise they need an advocate for jobs, an advocate for business and investment in this state,” he said.

OFF THE RECORD - THE SA ELECTION PODCAST

“Someone who can speak for South Australia with a passion and a belief that will give the state the leadership it needs.

This has been the long and sorry era of Labor Government in this state that has let South Australians down.”

Mr Turnbull did not provide a clear answer about whether a rumoured $1.2m donation to the state Liberal Party from Chinese businesswoman Sally Zou was inconsistent with the Federal Government’s proposed ban on foreign donations.

Mr Marshall says the party is yet to receive any donation after Ms Zou tweeted a picture of a cheque made out to the SA Liberal Party last week.

“Everyone has to comply with the rule on foreign donations and everybody does. I’m absolutely assured that the state division does,” he said.

“We’re seeking to change the law to prohibit foreign donations, that’s working it’s way through the Parliament at the moment, and if and when it does... then it will have to be complied with.”

Mr Marshall announced a future Liberal government would have a stand-alone export minister.
