AS he surveyed the empty expanses of the Westfield Marion shopping centre yesterday, Liberal leader Steven Marshall promised a bright new consumer nirvana of almost limitless shopping.
“How embarrassing it is for South Australia this weekend when we have our Fringe, our Festival, WOMAD on, we have people coming from interstate and overseas and they come down here to Marion, you can go to the movies but you can’t actually do any shopping,’’ he said.
Mr Marshall said a Liberal Government would introduce deregulation legislation in its first 100 days. But he couldn’t say how soon it might take effect.
He said Labor was “under the thumb of big union’’ when it came to shop trading hours but skirted questions of whether he was similarly beholden to big business.
Labor and SA Best oppose relaxing shopping hours.
