SPECIALIST nurses would be trained to treat patients with chronic and complex medical conditions in a $4 million Labor election pledge.
The funding would cover five new clinical coordinator nurses over four years to provide physical, psychological and emotional support from a patient’s diagnosis through to their treatment.
Motor neurone disorder, childhood arthritis, diabetes and addiction were among the main conditions of focus.
Currently non-government groups fund a specialist nurse at the Flinders Medical Centre and one at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital - to care for motor neurone disease and childhood arthritis patients - but that funding is due to run out. Health Minister Peter Malinauskas said they would support patients “to navigate the health system and coordinate their care”.
“We know that patients with ongoing and complex illnesses spend a lot of time arranging medical appointments across the health system.”
