Labor pledges $3 million for skate park in parklands

SKATERS would finally have a new permanent, $3 million park for their sport if Labor wins the state election.

THEY’VE been without a proper home in the city centre since 2015, and criticised for damaging seating in Topham Mall, while claiming they had nowhere else to go.

But skateboarders will finally have a permanent base again if Labor is re-elected.

Labor will commit $3 million to fully fund Adelaide City Council’s proposed skate park off West Tce, opposite the Hindley St intersection.

The council’s former skate park on North Tce was closed to make way for construction of a UniSA health building.

The Government then put $300,000 into a temporary skate park in the east parklands. Minister Katrine Hildyard said the proposed park was “near public transport” and would be “invaluable and accessible”.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese was pleased the Government would “fulfil a promise made some years ago now to reinstate a top quality skate park”. Champion skater Kat Williams said the project “sounds incredible”.
