A former coach of the year and a state board member will represent Far North Queensland clubs on the board of Football Queensland North.
Peter Hurney and Peter Acha were on Wednesday confirmed as the new faces on the expanded FQN board.
The vacancies arose after the merge of FNQ Football and Townsville’s North Queensland Football in April.
Both men have extensive histories in football and run successful businesses: Hurney and brother Glen own and manage an accountancy business in Innisfail while Acha is the general manager of Mareeba Mazda/Mitsubishi.
FQN general manager Declan Carnes said their history in the game, coupled with their business acumen, made them strong candidates.
“I don’t know them personally - the board spoke with them - but they’ve both got a history in football and business, and they are quality applicants,” Carnes said.
“It’s a fantastic result for the game and what we’re trying to achieve in the region.
“Having people on the ground who know football and have been part of it, and have that business experience, is exactly what we need.”
Hurney has won multiple coach of the year awards at Innisfail, including the Premier Women’s team in 2014 and the under-18s in 2011.
Acha has volunteered at Mareeba United for some time, serving as the Bulls’ treasurer.
In a statement, the FQN board, led by chairman John Azpiri, welcomed the duo as they “look forward to re-establishing football in the north as a leader in the World Game”.
The FNQ Premier League is set to kick off on the weekend of July 11.
