Police are calling a crash that left a woman in her 40s in hospital after her car collided into a fuel tanker and went down an embankment as potentially deliberate.

Paramedics were called to Stockroute Rd off the Walkerston bypass in Te Kowai, West of Mackay about 2.55pm Saturday to reports of a small white car colliding with a truck.

A Queensland spokeswoman said the female driver of the car suffered chest pain and the car had fallen five metres into a nearby gutter.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the woman may have deliberately collided into the side of the empty fuel tanker and police are investigating whether she was intoxicated at the time.

Queensland Police have flagged the crash as a possible mental health incident while witnesses reported that the driver of the car also wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

She was conscious when paramedics arrived on scene and her condition was unclear at this stage.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said the fuel tank had no leaks and that no one was trapped.

The woman was taken to Mackay Base Hospital.
