ONE of the Sunshine Coast's oldest McDonald's restaurants will close its doors, with staff given just three weeks to find new jobs.

McDonald's Mooloolaba Junction will cease trading on January 14, closing its doors the night before, after Sunshine Coast Council acquired the premises as part of its plan to widen Brisbane Rd.

The ownership of the premises was transferred to council on December 14 by "compulsory acquisition", meaning owners did not have a say.

Employees have been given just more than three weeks notice that they will lose their jobs through a letter from owner and operator, Randy Burningham.

It's the only McDonald's restaurant owned by Mr Burningham's business, Calliman Pty Ltd.

He said he was disappointed by the "forced closure" of the restaurant after 22 years of operation.

"The closure of the restaurant is beyond our control and forms part of the council's broader plan," he said in the letter.

"We understand that this will be difficult news to many of you."

It comes as McDonald's confirmed it will open a 14th store in Ipswich, with about 100 jobs on offer.
