The performing arts megafest bigger than any across the state will open in Brisbane Friday, and anticipation is building for the young talents chosen to take part.
Creative Generation — State Schools Onstage will celebrate its 2025 opening show Friday afternoon, with 2000 performing arts students preparing to storm Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Cenre.
The show’s gigantic cast has entered their final days of rehearsals for what is Queensland’s largest youth performing arts showcase, running over Friday and Saturday over a mammoth four shows.
Students from schools far and wide will take to the stage together after weeks of preparation while thousands of kilometres apart.
Students from Brisbane to Ingham, Tully to Toowoomba, Woree to Trinity Bay will be there for the extravaganza.
The large-scale event includes more than 1000 dancers, a choir of 500, more than 80 instrumentalists, 30 featured vocalists and a drama cast of 11.
Dance director Dan Venz said the variety show would be the “next chapter” after the event’s 20th anniversary last year.
“That’s basically looking at what is the next step for our future generations, what are children going to be facing going forward,” he said.
“We’ve got all styles of music and dance. We’ve got hip hop, jazz, tap, musical theatre, cabaret and contemporary in there.
“All of it comes together to form and showcase the students’ talents that we’ve here in Queensland.”
Mr Venz encouraged Queenslanders to take an interest in the event, saying those involved will be “our future”.
“This is (what) the entertainment future is looking like, and there’s some incredible stuff coming,” he said.
Albany Creek State High School Year 11 student Jayden Valentine said she dreamt of become a professional dancer after performing at her first event.
“I would really like to perform on cruise ships, get a contract on any cruise ships, even backup dancing on anything,” she said.
“It just makes me so happy. It’s different, and I just really enjoy it.”
Nambour State College Year 12 student Brooke Norris said she put a lot of effort in her CGEN preparation.
“My aspiration is one day to hopefully become a backup dancer for a singer, so I’m getting more experience to work in a professional environment,” she said.
More than 160 schools will participate, including six special schools and 24 schools a part of the First Nations Dance Ensemble.
