It has been a chilly start to winter with below average June temperatures across much of the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley. While we have a brief reprieve today, how long it will last depends on the clouds.

The Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley will enjoy a brief break in the chilly mornings, thanks to cloud cover blanketing much of the region.
Starting from Tuesday and running until the weekend, the thick clouds are expected to trap heat overnight and take the sting out of the air.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Shanne Kennedy said the weekend should be quite nice.
“The region should be pretty close to average temperatures, that is due to the cloud cover and increased moisture in the air,” he said.
“It may get a fraction cooler on Wednesday and Thursday morning as those clouds clear, but it won’t be as bad as the past weekend.
“From Friday temperatures will start to warm up, by the weekend the temperatures will be above average.”
Through to the weekend, there may be some chilly pockets overnight, with the Granite Belt expected to drop close to 0C, but for the most part the Darling Downs can expect overnight lows around 4-7C.
The reprieve is expected to last until about Wednesday next week as a trough moves across the region.
“Overall the expectation for winter is to still have above average temperature, but there is always that potential for a chilly period when we get the south westerly winds,” Mr Kennedy said.
“They can push up the cold dry air from the south.
“The Darling Downs can certainly expect to get another handful of cold snaps.”
