Authorities are warning Red Centre residents to prepare now for a potentially severe storm.

A severe storm warning for Central Australia was issued Tuesday afternoon at 3.05pm by the Bureau of Meteorology.

The alert is for the Lasseter, Simpson, and Tanami districts.

Communities such as Ntaria (Hermannsburg) and Alice Springs could be affected by the storm, according to the alert.

The warning states “gusty thunderstorms” could come to the towns by Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities are calling on residents to secure any loose objects and to ensure their pets and animals are safe.

Further advice includes avoiding being outside when the storm comes, and pulling over when driving if the storm gets too heavy.

Drivers are also urged to avoid driving through any water of an unknown depth.

Alice Springs had a severe storm at the beginning of November, which brought wind gusts just shy of 140km/h to the Red Centre capital.

The November storm knocked power in multiple homes in suburban Alice Springs.

In September, a different storm lashed the town – felling multiple branches, with one crushing a Nissan Patrol parked by the Todd River.
