LATEST: The driver of a car that struck a woman in the middle of the road tried desperately to save her life as emergency services rushed to the scene.

The 33-year-old woman was flung metres from the point of impact on Eimeo Rd at Rural View in a horrific incident children witnessed in a nearby Holden Commodore.

Police are now trying to piece together the woman's final moments and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Mackay District Duty Officer Mark Sweetnam said the Commodore had been parked on the side of the road and it was believed the woman "came from that vehicle".

"We are trying to establish exactly what has happened out here tonight," Senior Sergeant Sweetnam said.

"She was on the road, on the carriageway - not on the edge.

"(She has) then gone to the side of the road where she was treated by ambulance officers and members of the public, including a family member.
