High temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend over southeast, central and northern Queensland, with maximum temperatures continuing to hit the high 30s to low 40s.
Brisbane, Cloncurry, Charleville, Dalby, Georgetown, Goondiwindi, Longreach, Roma, Stanthorpe and Winton are all predicted to be impacted by the worst of the conditions.
Soaring humidity is adding to the discomfort of high temperatures, with Brisbane’s peak overnight temperature of 25.5C feeling more like 29.6C.
The overnight low in Redlands was 24.4C, which felt like 26.7C, while it was a similar story on the Sunshine and Gold coasts, where minimums of 21.6C and 23.4C see actually felt like 23.5C and 25.7C respectively.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Morgan Pumpa said Queensland would feel extremely humid on Friday and into the weekend.
“What we’re seeing is called ‘early season anomalies’, it’s getting very hot very early compared to the season of summer,” Ms Pumpa said.
Ms Pumpa said areas of serious heatwave concern were Esk, Gatton, Ipswich and Laidley.
“They’re in the middle of the extreme heatwave,” she said.
Today’s temperatures are expected to rise to 5C to 7C above average for this time of year across the east coast and eastern interior.
Ms Pumpa said the heat was expected to drop on Sunday and into next week.
She warned of severe thunderstorms expected to linger across southeast Queensland on Friday morning and afternoon, with the chance of flash flooding in regional areas.
“Heavy rainfall and flash flooding in a severe storm is a possibility across the Scenic Rim, Darling Downs and the Queensland and New South Wales border,” Ms Pumpa said.
“We encourage residents of these areas to turn on notifications for storm warnings,” she said.
