Wheelchair-bound man killed after hit by train at Coorparoo station

A man in a wheelchair has died after he was hit by a train at a Brisbane suburban station.

A man in a wheelchair has died after he was hit by a train at a Brisbane station.

The accident happened at Coorparoo train station about 11.40am on Tuesday.

It is understood the man was in his 20s.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing.

In a statement, a Queensland Rail spokesman said an empty tilt train had struck a person at the Stanley St East level crossing at Coorparoo.

“Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this incident, including our train crew,” the statement said.

“Queensland Ambulance and Queensland Police services are in attendance and we are working with emergency services on site.”

Rail replacement buses have been running for most of the afternoon, with services still disrupted at 4.50pm.

Rail buses remain in operation between Cannon Hill and Park Rd/Boggo Rd stations, while there are 30 mins delays for customers travelling between those stations.

Emergency services and rail workers cover a wheelchair at the scene.

A woman who drove past the rail crossing in the aftermath of the incident thought “there was something wrong”.

“I drove past here heading towards Morningside and I thought it was really odd, the boom gates just weren’t opening and I couldn’t see anything,” she said.

“I was like this is taking too long.

Initially, the woman thought the train may have broken down.

“I thought maybe the train had just broken down or something, and then I’ve only just come back passing it, heading back towards the office, and I saw, I wasn’t sure if it was a pram or wheelchair and I just went oh my god,” she said.

“It is just awful, that poor person.”

The Tilt Train was running on the Cleveland line as a result of the closure of the Exhibition line due to Cross River Rail works.

The Spirit of Queensland Tilt Train moved away from the Stanley St East level crossing at 2.57pm.

Just after 3pm, a Queensland Rail spokeswoman confirmed the Cavendish Rd level crossing had reopened to road traffic, while the Stanley St East level crossing was still closed while crews carried out final checks.
