Authorities investigating a mystery leak in South Bank’s Streets Beach say it is unclear when the popular attraction will reopen.
The pool, which has been closed since March 3 for investigations into water loss and maintenance works, was due to be reopened in mid-June but a South Bank Corporation spokesperson said extra time was needed to deliver repairs.
“All our efforts at Streets Beach and other water play areas are designed to ensure they are always safe for our visitors to swim in,” the spokesperson said.
“As Streets Beach continues to age, you may see us giving the lagoon some extra attention and care at times, which could require some more frequent and longer closures.”
The leak was caught during standard daily water monitoring and investigations commenced in March.
The spokesperson said the Boat Pool and Aquativity water play areas remained open for visitors to enjoy.
“Our water play areas, including Streets Beach, undergo regular annual maintenance and repairs, in addition to daily maintenance and monitoring,” the spokesperson said.
“Each year, we close Streets Beach, the Boat Pool and Aquativity for a period of time during winter to deliver a program of essential works to keep these much-loved assets running at their best.”
A South Bank Corporation sign at Streets Beach reads: “streets beach is closed for maintenance, further investigations and possible repairs.”
“The closure is anticipated to be in place until mid-2025”
Earlier this week, the South Bank Facebook page posted an update detailing why the iconic lagoon remains closed.
“Streets Beach will continue to stay closed while we undertake further investigations into water loss and deliver additional maintenance works,” the post read.
“While we hoped to reopen the much-loved lagoon by mid-June, we’re needing some extra time to address continuing water loss.”
The post said “extra assessments will help us get a clearer picture of when Streets Beach will reopen”
“We’ll keep you updated as we find out more. Thanks for your patience while we’re busy keeping South Bank running,” the post said.
