Brisbane’s biggest intersection upgrade, the Moggill Rd flyover in Indooroopilly, will now not open until the first quarter of next year, council has revealed.
Huge November rain was to blame for the latest delay, Infrastructure Chair Andrew Wines told Tuesday’s council meeting.
He said bitumen and concrete deliveries had been delayed and line marking, asphalt and concrete pours had to have dry soil.
Independent councillor for Tennyson ward Nicole Johnston said the project was on track to be one year late.
“The confusing traffic changes on Moggill Rd are driving residents mad,” she said.
“There are more witches hats out than workers and the LNP’s ongojng delays and cost blow outs are unacceptable.”
The second last traffic “switch”, the 26th switch of the project, was completed on Monday with one lane of inbound traffic now able to travel under the newly created overpass.
Outbound traffic has been travelling under the overpass since July 2024.
The final traffic switch will open the remaining inbound traffic lanes under the overpass.
Remaining works to finalise the corridor project are underway including the relocation of utility and stormwater services, installation of guardrails and barriers, activation of new traffic lights, landscaping and footpath works.
Final asphalting works will be delivered early next year, pending weather, to deliver new smooth roads throughout the intersection.
The project cost has ballooned from $126 million to $257 million. It was to have been completed this year.
Nearby residents have complained about noisy night works and businesses at nearby Indooroopilly Central said trade had been devastated by detours, traffic jams and fencing.
Between both Moggill Road and Coonan Street, the intersection carries 55,000 vehicles a day, making it one of the most significant road corridors for Brisbane’s West.
More than 40 car crashes were recorded at the Moggill Rd and Coonan St intersection between 2013 and 2020, with 13 resulting in hospitalisations and 23 requiring medical attention.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said “the reality is if we didn’t deliver this now the congestion and road safety in the western suburbs was going to get worse”.
“This is the biggest road project in Brisbane right now and we look forward to this project’s completion in the coming months.”
Mr Wines said that, along with other major infrastructure projects including Cross River Rail, the Coomera Connector and Sunshine Coast Rail, the complex Moggill Road upgrade had also faced inflationary pressures and industry hurdles.
“Recent rain has dampened progress on works, such as road asphalting, that need dry and sunny conditions, and with the unpredictable summer storm season ahead we’re going to plan extra time to get these critical works completed and plan for an early 2025 completion,” he said.
