Sunshine Coast property owners have made scathing submissions regarding a proposed beachside development set to ignore height limits.
Public submissions for a proposed development on 123 Mooloolaba Esplanade opened on February 17, with residents venting their fury at the developer’s plans to add an extra storey to the existing plans for Sirius Apartments.
The latest plans for the development were submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council in October last year, showing designs for the development to include nine units, rather than the previously approved eight.
Each apartment is also set to have higher ceiling in the updated plans.
According to the new proposal the building would span over 11 storeys, breaking the existing height limit by about three and a half metres.
The site currently features a two-storey building with food and retail outlets.
One nearby property owner, Daryl Jury, said in his submission to the council, the application’s intention to build above the height limit was “disappointing”.
“It is very disappointing to see a developer wishing to blatantly (exceed) this regulation for extra profit,” Mr Jury said.
“As this is a hard regulation and will affect many people in this area, I would expect the council to show integrity and support to its locals in rejecting the breach of an increase of height above 30 metres.”
Another submission from a unit owner, Philip Roberts, stated Sirius Apartments would block his view and promote overdevelopment in the beachside suburb.
“The increase in height will remove my a significant percentage of my view up the coast,” Mr Roberts said.
“The change to a height limit should not be allowed as it has been set by the council for a good reason – keep Mooloolaba distinct from the multiple high-rise and over development on Surfers Paradise Coast.”
A submission from Patricia Nicholls claimed the developer had not provided a reason for the additional storey.
“There has been no information provided as to why an extra 5m or half the size of an Olympic 10m diving platform needs to be added to the original construction documents,” Ms Nicholls said.
Submissions are set to close on March 7, 2025.
The town planner for the project has been contacted by this publication for comment.
