Mask mandate ends at Queensland airports but still required on planes

Masks will no longer have to be worn in Queensland airports from this weekend, but they’ll still be essential for anyone planning to fly.

Australian health body proposes end to mask mandates in airport terminals

People will no longer need to wear masks in Queensland airports from this weekend.

But Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said they would still be required on planes.

Ms D’Ath said the government was adopting the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee’s recommendation to ease the mandate from 12am on June 18.

“AHPPC considers that it is no longer proportionate to mandate mask use in airport terminals,” she said.

“From midnight this Friday the mask mandate in Queensland airports will be lifted.

“Passengers will still be required to wear masks on planes, in line with AHPPC’s advice.

“With Covid-19 and influenza still circulating in our community, we’re still encouraging Queenslanders to be vigilant.”

More than 4100 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Queensland on Wednesday.

A further 13 people have died and five people are being treated in ICU.

Ms D’Ath said people should consider wearing a mask if they couldn’t socially distance while indoors.

“We’re also encouraging people yet to receive the Covid-19 vaccine to come forward for vaccination and remind people they can also get a free flu vaccination,” she said.

The flu jab is free until the end of this month.
