Weapons have been seized and three people arrested after streets were shut down for hours south of Brisbane, with reports of armed men sparking a standoff with police.
Weapons have been seized and three people have been arrested after streets were shut down for hours south of Brisbane.
It’s understood police were called to reports of men armed with firearms removing a safe at Maple St at Marsden, at 8.30am on Friday.
Three people exited the home and were taken into custody and police received reports a fourth person was still inside the property armed.
This led to a declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act to be declared and specialist police to be called in just after 10am.
Southeast regional Inspector Laurie Shevlin said police had received reports of armed people unloading a safe, which prompted a swift response.
“At that address, police responded and [there were] further reports that there were armed persons with a firearm in the street,” he said.
At around 12.30, officers stormed the property and confirmed that no person was inside, and the emergency declaration was lifted.
Inspector Shevlin said there was no further danger to the public and firearms had been seized at the property.
“If there are additional people, obviously we are going to look at that,” he said.
“The firearms were the reason we came to the address, and we’ve seized all those firearms.”
Police remain at the property and weapons could be seen on the floor of the garage, including a double-barrel shotgun.
Maple street neighbour Kristy Dice said she watched the tense standoff unfold from her window. She said she could see police outside her property about 9am, sheltering behind her daughter’s car.
“There were police everywhere with guns out, pointed out the house. So that was a little bit frightening.”
“I was told that they had seen someone with a grinder in a safe this morning, and then the police came.”
Kylie Sullivan, who has been on the street for 10 years said she had experienced some trouble from residents on Maple St, with kids stealing scooters from her property.
“Other than that, no police have been here recently that I know of,” she said.
The emergency declaration covered Oregon St, Hickory St, Chambers Flat Rd, Bunya St, and Birch St with tyre spikes on either side of Maple St, and entry blocked by police.
The three people from the address are assisting with inquiries and investigators are appealing to anyone with relevant information or CCTV/dashcam footage from the area this morning to come forward.
