Man charged after fatal Beenleigh shooting
The man charged after allegedly being found hiding semi-submerged among reeds by police dogs following the fatal shooting of a man at Beenleigh has been identified in court.
The 22-year-old man charged after allegedly being found hiding semi-submerged among reeds by police dogs following the fatal shooting of a man at Beenleigh has been named in court.
Emergency services were called to Hugh Muntz Park about 10.40pm on Tuesday following reports a man had been gunned down.
Paul Tagirara, of Beenleigh, has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and receiving tainted property, and his matter was mentioned in Beenleigh Magistrates court on Thursday.
Police will allege a 35-year-old Bahrs Scrub man received a gunshot wound to his chest and died at the scene.
It will be alleged a stolen white Kia Stonic with stolen registration plates sped away from the scene shortly after the shooting.
Officers sighted the vehicle at Kumbari Ave, Labrador, and a tyre deflation device was successfully deployed on Jabiru Island.
The getaway car continued for a short distance before being abandoned at the intersection of Hope Island Road and Helensvale Road.
Police will allege the driver fled on foot into nearby scrubland.
Dog squad officers swept the area and arrested Tagirara after finding him in the water among the reeds near Saltwater Park.
Police searched him and allegedly uncovered ammunition. A firearm was located nearby.
Regional Crime Co-ordinator Acting Superintendent Paul Fletcher said yesterday crews tried desperately to save the 35-year-old.
“They began treatment of the male, but unfortunately because of his injuries he was declared deceased at the scene,” Supt Fletcher said.
Police allege the men arrived at the park separately and investigators are working to establish their relationship.
“We’re still conducting inquiries into potential witnesses around that area,” Supt Fletcher said.
Supt Fletcher would not comment on the type of firearm used or if it was registered.
“I’m not going to give any information around the firearm at this stage,” he said.
“Any use of a firearm in any type of offence is always a major concern to police. They have very bad consequences for many members of the public, as well.”
Tagirara’s duty later made an application for adjournment as his family are making an application for legal representation.
No bail application was made, as the Courier-Mail understands further charges are expected to be laid.
The prosecution told the court Tagirara was on a return to prison warrant and remains remanded in custody.
No pleas were entered.
His matter was adjourned to appear via video link on January 22.
