The international Paralympics boss has praised the progress of the 2032 Games and plans for a dedicated para-sport facility to help drive a record medal haul and to inspire future generations.

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons is in Brisbane for two days for high-level meetings with the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee, Paralympics Australia President, Alison Creagh, Games delivery partners and para-athletes.

His trip follows a visit by the International Olympic Committee’s President and President Elect to Brisbane last week.

In a keynote speech at the University of Queensland “inclusion revolution” lunch, he said Paralympics Australia wanted to lead the medals table at Brisbane 2032, a feat not achieved since Sydney 2000.

He also praised plans for the proposed redevelopment of the indoor stadium at Chandler, specifically for Para sport, to help benefit a new generations of Paralympians.

“We are really encouraged that accessibility and legacy is at the heart of the government’s infrastructure plan,” he said.

“By working together to deliver magnificent Paralympic Games, you will change this country forever, create new sporting heroes and generate greater opportunities for Australia’s 5.5 million people with disabilities.”

Paralympian and Australian Sports Commissioner Dr Bridie Kean said Brisbane would be used as catalyst to promote better accessibility and inclusion in sport for future generations.

“As someone who grew up with a disability and was excluded from sport, I cannot emphasise the difference it has made in my life, not only as a Paralympic athlete, but from just someone who wants to play social sport on the weekend to have access to sport,” she said.

“It is truly something I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to have.”
