Here are five places where you’re guaranteed to get a mouth-watering croissant in South East Queensland.
CHRISTIAN JACQUES BAKERY, KANGAROO POINT
It doesn’t get more authentically French in the river city than Christian Jacques Bakery at Kangaroo Point. This artisan boulanger, tucked away beneath the Story Bridge, was launched in 2018 and specialises in slow-fermented croissants created over two days. Jacques has more than three decades of experience in his art, and it is truly an art, and is joined by a very small team of similarly dedicated patissiers. There are two standout favourites at this little standing room only shopfront – without a doubt the almond custard croissant and the bacon, honey and goat’s cheese croissant, which we have on good authority is the favourite of Jacques himself.

CERIN PASTICCERIA, WOOLLOONGABBA
It’s been open only a little over a year and already Cerin Pasticceria has become a firm favourite for lovers of a sweet treat. Expect to have your mind blown by this traditional Italian pasticceria by Matteo Cerin and Giuseppe Caputo. Their classic croissant, the cornetto, is a little unexpected for the uninitiated, featuring an infusion of vanilla and citrus zest flavours, which also lend themselves perfectly to the bold flavours of their almond variety. For those with a savoury tooth, the offering at Cerin is a delightful Italian twist on the old ham and cheese croissant, instead featuring a truffle salame and smoked provola, which is a personal favourite.

BROOKI BAKEHOUSE, FORTITUDE VALLEY
We know this one is technically not a croissant, but this decadent option has earned its place on this list. By now, most of you would recognise the pink logo of Brisbane’s Brooki Bakehouse. But perhaps one of founder Brooke Bellamy’s lesser celebrated bites is her incredible spins on the “crookie” or a croissant cookie. Bellamy tried to take them off the menu six times, but the demand was too great. So for now there’s the choc-chip crookie, and it has been joined by the pistachio crookie, which sees a flaky croissant stuffed with signature Brooki cookie dough and pistachio spread, with a little extra of each on top, baked in the oven and dipped in pistachios.

THE PASTRY LAB, CALOUNDRA
Started by a duo of long-time Sunshine Coast locals, The Pastry Lab is the place to go for premium flaky goodness. Chris, a pastry chef with 18 years of experience, and Emily, a medical scientist, came together as life and business partners, and what has resulted is a patisserie to beat all others. The combination of pastry know-how and Emily’s scientific and experimental brain has resulted in all sorts of funky croissant creations, from their pistachio cross-laminated cruffin to a twice-baked almond cream-laden twist on an almond croissant. The team has a set range of suppliers they use time and time again to ensure their quality.
2/80 Lower Gay Terrace, Knox Ave, Caloundra
CUSTARD CANTEEN, TALLEBUDGERA CREEK
Custard Canteen (and nearby sibling Neptune Kiosk) on the shores of Tallebudgera Creek has made a name for itself as a purveyor of perfect pastry, and their croissants are no exception. Custard Canteen is raising the bar for pick-up-and-go bites, excelling in more than just the classic bacon and egg roll, though they do those splendidly, too. Perhaps the most standout of the offerings at this little hole-in-the-wall joint is their recently added twice-baked Biscoff croissant. This buttery, flaky pastry is dipped in a rum syrup before being loaded with a decadent frangipane and Biscoff cream and then topped with Biscoff crumb and almonds. Drool.
