A former Brisbane teacher has been charged with additional historical child sexual offences after new complainants came forward following a police appeal in August.

Police allege Stephen Patrick Andrew Kayser, 69, committed a further 32 offences against 19 young people aged between 9 and 13 at two Brisbane educational facilities during the course of his duties as a teacher between 1987 and 1992.

Detectives from the Morningside Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) attended an address in Brisbane’s south on Sunday October 20, where the 69-year-old man was taken into custody.

He has been charged with a further 17 counts of indecent treatment of children under 16, four counts of taking a child under 16 for immoral purposes, and 11 counts of common assault.

Police prosecutor Lauren Archer opposed bail, saying there was a strong Crown case against Kayser for the “extremely serious charges” – which she said could see him face a “lengthy custodial sentence” if found guilty.

She submitted he posed an unacceptable risk of reoffending.

Kayser’s lawyer, David Chambers told the court that his client had retired from teaching and no longer held a blue card.

He said Kayser had complied with his existing bail conditions and had been seeing a psychologist.

The court heard Kayser’s charges were all historical in nature, and the matter could take years to be finalised.

Kayser was granted bail on conditions he report to his local police station three days a week and continue to live at his Carina Heights home, where the court heard he lives with his wife of 25 years and their adult child.

Further, he must not have any contact with the complainants or any children under the age of 16.

Detective Senior Sergeant Deanna Geck of the Morningside CPIU commended all for their courage in speaking out.

“Anyone entrusted to care for children must hold themselves to the highest standard,” she said.

“It is deplorable for anyone to use their position as leverage to carry out deplorable acts against a child and we are committed to holding any perpetrator to account.

“I acknowledge the outstanding courage of all who have come forward.

“Your bravery helps police … and in turn gives other victim-survivors the confidence to come forward.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Geck encouraged anyone who has knowledge of this type of offending to come forward.

“I want to reassure you that what has happened to you is not your fault and you are not alone, and that there are support services available to you.”

Investigations are ongoing and police are providing support to those involved.

Kayser’s charges were all adjourned to November 11.
