Every Queensland suburb’s Covid cases mapped amid worst ever wave

New health data reveals the number of Covid cases in every Queensland suburb as the state grapples with its worst wave since the pandemic started. USE THE INTERACTIVE MAP

‘Very good chance’ of COVID-19 infection in QLD as wave expected to get ‘worse’

As Queensland prepares for a wave of Covid potentially worse than what was experienced in January, data reveals the hardest-hit suburbs.

Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard has urged Queenslanders to “prepare now,” warning that the third wave will only get worse in coming weeks, while cases of influenza peak.

Dr Gerrard said health experts were bracing for about 1000 hospitalisations, similar to what was experienced in January when restrictions were first relaxed.

But Covid has been impacting different parts of the state worse than others.

A breakdown showing the number of PCR-confirmed Covid cases in every Queensland suburb from June 1 to July 5 shows some areas have escaped relatively unscathed, while higher-density suburbs have seen cases surge.

The highest concentration of the virus was detected in Maryborough with 352 cases – 100 more than anywhere else.

Caboolture South recorded 246 cases, Kirwan (near Townsville) with 237, and 229 at Mareeba near Cairns.

Across the southeast, suburb case numbers range from 30-140, although the Morningside/Seven Hills area has had 160 cases.

Wynnum West notched up 137 infections, Coorparoo 117, and the Gap 116.

Ipswich also recorded its fair share of cases – 126 in the city centre, 108 at Redbank Plains and 106 at Springfield Lakes.

On the Gold Coast, the Nerang and Mt Nathan area recorded 122 cases, while there were 119 at Southport.

The Toowoomba region was high on the list too – Highfields in the city’s north was home to 179 Covid cases with the western suburbs close behind on 151.

Nearby Warwick recorded one of the highest numbers in the state – 177 cases were detected in just one month.

Meanwhile, on the Sunshine Coast, the highest recorded case numbers were in the Nambour region with 137, dropping off to 102 in Maroochydore and 101 in the Noosa Hinterland.

In Central Queensland, Mackay recorded 21 cases while there were 64 at nearby Andergrove.

In the Far North, a number of Cairns suburbs surpassed 150 cases, with the highest of 195 at Trinity Beach.

In the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, Queensland recorded 5878 new cases, with the state’s total cases since the pandemic started at 1,322,636.

Of the 705 people currently hospitalised with the virus, 18 are in intensive care, while 92.7 per cent of the state is fully vaccinated.
