Engine immobiliser scheme to be available to all Queenslanders from January

Every Queenslander will be able to apply for a free engine immobiliser to prevent their car from being stolen in an additional $10 million investment by the state government.
It comes after a successful trial in North Queensland where all 20,000 vouchers for secondary engine immobilisers have been snapped up after being rolled out last year.
Police Minister Mark Ryan said the government had decided to roll out the scheme across Queensland due to its success.
“This is a nation-leading initiative,” Mr Ryan said.
“Every single Queenslander will have the opportunity to get one of these 20,000 vouchers.”
The $500 vouchers were first rolled out in Townsville, Mount Isa and Cairns to go towards the supply and installation of an immobiliser to prevent car theft in the regions.
Since then, Mr Ryan said no cars with immobilisers installed had been stolen in those regions.
But the majority of the vouchers had not been redeemed, with the cut-off for installation now December.
During the trial police exhausted all vouched allocations and distributed a total of 20,242 but as of June, 56 per cent still had not been redeemed.
Specifically, 5936 vouchers remain outstanding in Townsville, 5017 in Cairns, and 388 in Mount Isa.
Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said they were delighted by the results and called on the federal government to make it mandatory for all new vehicles to have secondary immobilisers fitted.
The additional $10 million rollout of vouchers will be available to all Queenslanders from January next year.
