Excavators have descended on Eagle Street Pier today as demolition of the iconic Brisbane CBD precinct ramps up as part of a $2.5bn redevelopment.

More than 24,000 tonnes of concrete will be removed over coming weeks as demolition crews dismantle the site to make way for the Waterfront Brisbane project.

Dexus’s project director Matthew Beasley said demolition down to ground level should be completed by June before works shift to the basement and replacement of the river walk.

“Keeping concrete, steel and other materials out of landfill helps us improve the environmental performance of this landmark project.”

“We know that for every 10,000 tonnes of materials recycled 9.2 jobs are created, compared to 2.8 jobs if the materials are sent to landfill.”

“We are excited to work with John Holland to recycle 90 per cent of contraction waste materials,” Mr Beasley said.

Waterfront Brisbane will feature two new office towers, 9000 sqm of public space, expansive landscaping and shaded terraces. It will also include a river walk as well as numerous food and beverage spaces.

It will replace the Eagle Street Pier restaurant complex, which was built in 1989.

Mr Beasley said the first two years of the project will be focused on civil and marine works.

“It’s all about doing the ground works and prepping the foundation,” he said.

“In the third year work will start on the 52-storey tower. With it being 45 per cent leased five years from completion is a real vote of confidence.”

The redevelopment should be completed in mid-2028.
