Peter Dutton thinks he will “likely” remain Home Affairs Minister in an upcoming Cabinet reshuffle but would go anywhere including the backbench if that’s what Scott Morrison wants.
The Prime Minister will soon unveil a fresh Cabinet line-up following the retirement of former Finance Minister Mathias Cormann with strong speculation Mr Dutton could move to Defence.
Peter Dutton, Stuart Robert mentioned for new portfolios
Speaking on Sky News this morning, Mr Dutton said the only person who definitely knew the make-up of the next Cabinet was Mr Morrison but he did not envision moving to Defence.
“I think I’m likely to stay in Home Affairs and that ultimately is a decision for the Prime Minister,” he said.
But he said whatever role the Prime Minister asked him to fill from Defence to the backbench he would accept because “he’s the boss … so you do as he says”.
Following Mr Cormann’s retirement, Trade and Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham took on the additional responsibility of Finance and will continue that role in the new Cabinet.
But he will shed trade and tourism, with Employment Minister Michaelia Cash and Education Minister Dan Tehan both mentioned as strong contenders for the trade role.
Queensland Senator Amanda Stoker’s name has also been mentioned as a possible new addition to the frontbench.
