Locals are outraged after a disabled man’s $5000, one-of-a-kind wheelchair battery was stolen from a garage on the Sunshine Coast.

Bruce Stark’s wheelchair battery was stolen from a locked physio garage at Caloundra on Thursday, February 27.

According to local community legend Ashley Robinson, known for his involvement at the Alexandra Headlands Surf Club and for running for mayor, it was stolen between 2pm and 2.30pm.

Mr Robinson said “there really are some ordinary people out there”.

“Someone decided it was a good idea to take Bruce Stark’s Firefly today... the battery powered attachment for the front of his wheelchair to cover long distances.

“It was taken from the Sportscare Physiotherapy garage just behind the cinemas in Caloundra.

“It has no use to anybody else unless you’re in an identical wheelchair.

“This piece of much needed equipment costs $5000 so as you can imagine Bruce would like to know if anybody saw anything or can offer any information for its return.

“If anyone has car dashcam footage around that time in Lamkin Lane and Knox Ave that would be handy.”

Sunshine Coast locals were quick to share their outrage for such a “disgusting” act on social media.

“What sort of low life does this…and to a great guy like Bruce,” Mick Taplin said.

“What a low act,” Julie Kemp said.

“So disappointing,” Virg Anderson said.

“There are some disgusting people out there,” Barbara Byrne said.

“That is such a low act,” Sherri Lilley said.

Queensland Police Service has been contacted for comment.
