BOM changes new website radar map to old colour scheme

The Bureau of Meteorology has responded to colourful community feedback, switching the default colours on its radar back to what Queenslanders were used to.

Meteorologist Anthony Cornelius posted a comparison of the old and new BOM weather radar earlier this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology is already responding to complaints on its new website, bringing back the old colours for its radar Queenslanders demanded.

The change was made today, timing with BOM being dragged in front of state and territory leaders asking how it will fix the chaotic rollout of its new website.

BOM said it will be a return “to a visual style many users said they found intuitive and reliable for interpreting weather conditions”.
“Technically speaking, it will display rain reflectivity (dBZ)”.

The rain reflectivity setting shows extreme rainfall and potential hail as very dark red or black.

Users will be able to choose whether they see their rain display as rain reflectivity (dBZ) or alternatively in millimetres per hour (mm/h), which is how it is displayed on the BOM Weather app.

Acting CEO Peter Stone said the colour change was part of the Bureau’s commitment to responding to community feedback.

“We’ve listened to your feedback, and have restored the previous radar colour scheme,” he said.

“We will continue to assess options for further updates and improvements at the same time as pushing on with our efforts to help the community become more familiar with the new website.

“So, more changes are in the pipeline.”

An expert on government websites and databases told this masthead it’s important not to make too many changes at once, when speculating why BOM’s new website was so universally panned.

It appears BOM has seen the light.
