An elite secondary school on the Gold Coast has banned students from ‘promposing’ to their dates for formal, with one student allegedly threatened with suspension.

Ashmore independent Catholic school Aquinas College on Wednesday issued a ban on all ‘promposals’ for the graduating class of 2025.

A ‘promposal’ is typically an elaborate or creative way to ask someone to a school formal.

One student was allegedly threatened to be suspended as they were ‘promposing’ to their date for formal.

The threat of suspension was allegedly issued before the ban was put in place.

The reasoning behind the ban was that ‘promposals’ were about getting validation on social media, wanting likes and views rather than asking a partner to their school formal.

A student who did not wish to be identified said the ban was ‘wrong’ as “a promposal was a display of respect, solidarity and compassion to the individual you are promposing to”.

“It shines the light on love, friendship and kindness within the school community,” the student said.

“Promposals are seen as a way of bringing the community in the college together for love implementing the school value of belonging.”

Aquinas College opened in 1964 and was listed as having about 860 students.

Aquinas College has been contacted for comment.
