Aaron Gocs opens up on THAT viral moment with Steve Smith at the Gabba
Brisbane comedian Aaron Gocs who went viral overnight for accidentally distracting Steve Smith has fired back at the haters who fat shamed him.
Brisbane comedian Aaron Gocs jokingly reckons he’s had to flee the city after accidentally becoming one of the biggest hits of the day during the second Ashes Test at the Gabba on Friday.
The comic with the signature flowing mullet left cricket fans in stitches when he appeared on TV coverage appearing to distract stand-in Aussie skipper Steve Smith as he was about to face another fireball from English counterpart Ben Stokes.
Carrying a refreshing ale and wearing an Australian ODI shirt as he returned to his seat, the distinctive-looking Gocs was seemingly in the sights of Smith, who stepped away from the batting crease.
Smith pointed as Gocs looked back sheepishly during the hilarious break in play.
“Bit hard to pin that bloke, he’s gone to get a beer,” Fox Cricket’s Mark Howard commented as the cameras panned on Gocs.
“Good on him, he’s just enjoying his day at the cricket.”
Gocs told The Courier-Mail he would not be at the cricket on Saturday, but only because he has a gig in Newcastle tonight.
He said the incident had made him both a cult hero and a villain in an instant and given his Instagram account a big boost.
“It’s been crazy,” he said.
“Overall, it’s just fun. Most people have been light-spirited but there’s also been a bit of nastiness, with comments about my weight and my look and saying I distracted the game.”
Gocs said he did not believe he was distracting Smith as he was returning to his seat with his beer.
“I didn’t think I was in his eyeline sight,” he said.
“They already have the sight screen and that, with 200 seats taken out where no-one can sit.
“I think it was a perfect storm because Steve Smith has been known to be easily distracted.
“In that moment, I wasn’t kind of thinking what I looked like. I was just kind of trying to walk back to my seat.
“I am aware of the whole ‘don’t walk in front of their (batsmen’s) view’ thing.”
Gocs said there was also speculation that Smith had been distracted by an English fielder “but once the commentators thought that it was me, they just rolled with it”.
“I guess people would have been pretty angry if he’d (Smith) had got out - I would have been like public enemy No.1,” he said with a chuckle.
“He hasn’t reached out to me yet - I guess he’s focusing on the match.”
Gocs said he had been inundated with calls from media outlets and old school mates and work colleagues “from years ago”.
“My Instagram was going off and people were coming out of the woodwork,” he said.
Gocs said he hoped to be back at the cricket on Sunday - no doubt being extra-careful where he walks with his beer.
