AS we head into the cooler months of the year, the entertainment industry is only just warming up with plenty of music, art, theatre and film to keep Sydneysiders busy. Here is the best of what’s on in Sydney for the next three months.

AS we head into the cooler months of the year, the entertainment industry is only just warming up with plenty of music, art, theatre and film to keep Sydneysiders busy.

 

Here is the best of what’s on in Sydney for the next three months.

 

Sydney Royal Easter Show

After the disappointment of cancelling last year’s event in March, the Sydney Royal Easter Show returns on April 1.

While the 2021 Sydney Royal Easter Show may seem many months away, it will be undergoing a change of date and will now run in alignment with the NSW school holiday period (cue parents cheers). The new dates are 1 April to 12th April 2021 and the Royal Agricultural Society is planning to welcome back as many of our exhibitors and supporters as possible.

First held in 1823, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is Australia’s largest annual ticketed event, attracting close to 900,000 attendees each year.

The Show is a celebration of Australian culture, from our rural traditions to our modern day lifestyles, providing unique experiences for everyone. Revenue generated by it allows the RAS to invest in agricultural programs, competitions, education, youth and rural NSW and 2021.

Australian Ballet

The Australian Ballet’s new artistic director David Hallberg kicks off the company’s 2021 Sydney season with triple-bill New York Dialects.

New York Dialects, will feature two acclaimed masterworks from the great game-changer of 20th-century ballet, George Balanchine, and unveil a new contemporary work by one of the most in-demand New York-based choreographers, Pam Tanowitz.

Sydney Writers Festival

If the last year of lockdown has you feeling bookish, the Sydney Writers Festival, Australia’s largest celebration of writing and ideas is returning for 2021.

While the program might not be announced yet, the dates are locked in. (26 April – 2 May 2021)

A Festival for readers, writers and thinkers to share ideas, tell stories and celebrate literature, each year, more than 400 writers take part in over 300 conversations, debates, performances and panel discussions with one-third of the events free.

The program will be announced in March 2021, but mark the dates in your calendar until then.

Sydney Comedy Festival

Save the date and get ready for Sydney’s month of laughter to return. Like a beautiful butterfly emerging from a quarantine chrysalis, Sydney’s biggest month of comedy returns in 2021 from 19 April – 16 May.

The Festival program features performances from the finest Australian acts and the most promising emerging talent offering up everything from stand up to sketch, satire, impro, musical, absurdist, theatre, magic and kids comedy.

Today, the Festival is one of Sydney’s fastest growing cultural events that aims to satisfy Sydney’s rampant appetite for comedy so help show your support for stand-up as they get back on their feet.

Finders Keepers market

The Finders Keepers market is the longest running and biggest design market in Australia and a community favourite among stallholders and shoppers alike.

Described as more of a festival than a market, the blockbuster weekend at The Cutaway, Barangaroo combines art, good food, live music and community spirit under one creative roof, giving design lovers a chance to shop and support small, local businesses.

The market will fill the super-sized underground cultural space with more than 200 independent artists and designers showcasing their work.

From ceramics to homewares to jewellery and fashion, the event offers visitors a unique experience to shop, explore discover and connect with creatives in their community.

The Sydney Fair

The Sydney Fair offers vintage collectors and enthusiasts the perfect day of treasure hunting with over 50 of Australia’s most outstanding dealers displaying more than 5,000 rare pieces to view and purchase.

Visitors can peruse furniture, decorative arts, jewellery, art, prints and posters, books, vintage fashion and couture and luxury vintage goods and chat to some of the country’s most well known antique dealers.

From nostalgia fans looking for an art deco lampshade, to art lovers seeking a conversation piece, there are all sorts of one-of-a-kind items to be unearthed.

Afterpay Australian Fashion Week

After cancelling the 2020 event just weeks before models were due to strut down the catwalk, Fashion Week is back with a brand new sponsor to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

As the pinnacle event on the Australian fashion calendar, Australian Fashion Week, now sponsored by Afterpay, has undergone a huge makeover ahead of its return, with new support measures to revive retail and get shoppers closer to the runway.

This year, fashion week will become a dynamic experience with both live and digital environments, leveraging new technologies and fresh show formats. For the first time ever, consumers will be able to purchase tickets to select shows on the official schedule and access VIP packages via Afterpay Australian Fashion Week: The Experience, meaning everyone can be a part of the action.

Come From Away

Come From Away will make its long awaited Sydney opening in June after a record breaking season in Melbourne, where it earned the title of the most successful musical ever in the Comedy Theatre’s 92-year history.

The Tony and Olivier award-winning musical will open at the Capitol Theatre from Thursday 3 June after being postponed in August last year.

Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland, Canada that welcomed them all. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships

Archie 100 - A century of the Archibald Prize

This year, the Art Gallery of New South Wales celebrates the 100th birthday of Australia’s oldest and most-loved portrait award, the Archibald Prize. To mark the occasion, the Gallery will present Archie 100: A Century of the Archibald Prize.

The exhibition, which kicks off on 5 June, will explore the prize across its history, revealing fascinating stories behind 100 carefully selected artworks. “It uncovers changes in society in engaging ways, enabling people to experience how artistic styles and approaches to portraiture have changed over a century.”

Sydney Film Festival

Australia’s premier international film festival returns in June and will have movie-goers back in the cinema after going virtual and national for the first time in its history last year.

The world’s best new films will come to Sydney for 12 days and nights of inspiring and entertaining premieres, talks and parties, presenting a diverse slate of features, documentaries and short films.

The 2021 season will mark the 52nd year of the Festival’s Australian short film competition, making it the oldest short film competition in Australia, so mark the dates in your diary and get the popcorn ready.
