Territory anglers looking to bag one of the Million Dollar Fish competition’s $10,000 barramundi will have the chance to double their money tomorrow.
Competition underwriter Sportsbet has increased the prize for reeling in one of the fish to $20,000 for one day only to celebrate national Gone Fishing Day on Sunday.
To celebrate, Territorians and visitors are encouraged to explore the NT’s best fishing regions including the Tiwi Islands, Darwin, Katherine, Kakadu and Arnhem Land to try and bag the big one.
Major Events Minister Paul Kirby said the competition was an opportunity for the Territory to showcase its fishing regions, as well as draw in visitors to support local business.
“If you needed an incentive to take the boat out or wet a line at one of our fantastic land-based fishing locations, this is the perfect time to register for Million Dollar Fish and double your winnings if you catch a $10,000 barra tomorrow,” he said.
“We are incredibly lucky to have some of the nation’s best fishing right here in our own backyard.”
Anglers must be registered for Season 8 of the competition, which kicked off on October 1, to claim a prize.
Nine $1 million barra have now been released since the competition began in 2015, with all still up for grabs.
Once a $1 million fish is caught, the remaining eight will be worth $10,000 each.
Sportsbet NT operations and partnerships manager Thijs Bors encouraged as many people as possible to drop a line.
“Registering is quick, easy and free, and by doing so, you might find yourself a million dollars better off,” he said.
Anglers can register for Season 8 at www.milliondollarfish.com.au.
