STUDENTS at a small western suburbs school will meet Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, during their Australian tour.

Kilkenny Primary School principal Mike Tate said staff and students were informed of next month's royal visit at a school assembly on Tuesday afternoon and were in shock.

"The whole community is very excited; that's staff, parents, students," he said.

"(When it was announced) the reaction was shock and anticipation. The children were very excited and were quite chatty because it came as quite a surprise."

Mr Tate said he did not know why the school was chosen and thought it was simply the "luck of the draw".

He said details of the visit were still not confirmed, so the school was trying to keep the announcement low-key.

Students Alice, Jaidan, Persia, Matthew and Alie drew pictures of the royal couple who are due to join them in the school's kitchen garden, where the Prince will be invited to exercise his green thumb.

Mr Tate said the school would prepare the students with some lessons about the royals.

Celebrity cook Stephanie Alexander, who pioneered the kitchen garden, was also expected to be at the school during the visit to demonstrate the benefits of the program.

"It will be fantastic to have her come to our site again and see how our garden has developed," Mr Tate said.

The royal couple will visit Adelaide in the second week of November after arriving in Australia on November 5.

The public is likely to get the chance to see the pair in Adelaide - however, details are still unknown.

At Kilkenny, Charles and Camilla will also will see a showcase of SA's food and wine industry at Penfolds winery.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are due to

as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, according to information released by Clarence House.

The tour, which also takes in Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, is themed around service to the community.
