The Territory’s road toll has climbed to two less than three weeks into the new year.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lindner said a male pedestrian was struck by a road train on the Stuart Hwy about 4km south of the Mataranka cemetery.

He alleged the driver of the road train did not stop at the scene but contacted police at a later time.

Sergeant Lindner said the male driver was not under the influence of alcohol and police were waiting for the results of a drug test.

He said the driver was assisting police with inquiries.

Sergeant Linder said the man had not been formally identified as of 9.48am and Major Crash and Katherine detectives were still investigating the crash.

“The investigation is in the early stages and we would like to speak with anyone who saw any pedestrians or parked vehicles on the Stuart Highway south of Mataranka last night to make contact with police on 131 444,” he said.
